Curved Bench

This post includes some pics of a curved bench we have been working on.

Made from block and poured concrete, it follows a similar style to other items on this particular landscaping project.

The floor where the seat was to be placed had already been tiled, so the shape of the bench was drawn out on the ground and then a 4" wide groove cut out so that the block work would be adhering to the concrete slab below.

Concrete columns were formed and poured in the corners. These were difficult to form, thanks to the curved nature of them. We had to use 1/4" plywood and sheet metal to form the sides.

The base was filled, and a layer of gravel was added to the top.

I didn't get any pictures of the slab pour i'm afraid, but we formed the edge, added plenty of rebar, and poured a 3" slab. It has a very slight slope so rain runs off it.

The blocks resting on the plywood above are to keep them in place as guides while we add the cement repello. Usually we would nail these in place whilst we were working, but we did not want to damage the smooth surface of the bench seat.

As you can see, its shape is very different from the norm, but thats what makes it interesting. The client says she is going to make cushions to fit the seat and back. Whilst I will be painting the lower base area.
